Over this past summer, while I contemplated whether grad school was the right decision for me to make and tried to figure out what exactly I wanted to do with the rest of my life, I was introduced to the BBC’s Sherlock. It quickly became my absolute favorite show. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something where the characters, cinematography, score and script swept me up the way this show did. It actually reminded me of what I want to do in life. Work on film and television sets.
I admit I was a bit late to the party for those who found the series when it first aired and I have in no way been waiting as long as some, but I can’t help but be all excited that this morning BBC released four trailers for the new series and two clips yesterday. I’ve never seen so many people all over the world get as excited about 4 minutes of footage as I have in the last two days. It’s absolutely wonderful. The Sherlock fandom has become a bit like family…or at least some of them have and they have helped serve as inspiration for my projects in grad school.
I think I originally had a bigger meaning for this post, but in all honesty I can’t even put into words how excited I am to see my favorite actor grace my television once again in my favorite television series. I am excited to see how Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss wove the canon into the stories they chose to tell. I am excited to see the relationship that continues to form between Sherlock and John. And I’m even super excited to see what new creative innovations come out of the fandom once the episodes have aired. 2012, you are going to be one hell of a year and I can’t wait. You can guarantee that you’ll be hearing from me once I see the series…which may not be until May as it won’t air in the U.S. until then. I wonder how long I can stay unspoiled?
